Another Christmas Lifer - Red-Headed Woodpecker
Last Christmas I had the opportunity to come across a life bird when I located two Lapland Longspurs mixed in with a flock of Horned Larks at the agricultural fields along Smith Lane in Lehigh County (PA). This year, I decided to head to Peace Valley Park in Bucks County (PA), to hopefully locate the Red-Headed Woodpecker that had been reported there. Another Lifer! (click to continue ...)

Horned Lark at Smith Lane - Pennsylvania
I struck out on the Snowy Owl that had been reported for about a week along Route 100 near Trexlertown, Pennsylvania, but still had some time to burn before work. I decided to head to an area referred to as "Smith Lane" in nearby Alburtis to hopefully photograph some fields birds. Smith Lane is a gravel road that navigates through agricultural fields and is a reliable area for birds such as the Horned Lark, American Pipit, Lapland Longspur, and Snow Bunting (click to continue ...)

a Touch of Snow at Sandy Hook - New Jersey
After a day of photographing birds at Barnegat Lighthouse SP this November with a friend, we decided to head up the New Jersey coast to Sandy Hook, with hopes of seeing one or both of the Snowy Owls that had been reported there. After striking out on our first stop, we got a tip from a fisherman that one of the owls was at North Beach (click to continue ...)

the Harlequin Effect - Barnegat Lighthouse State Park
With November coming to an end and winter weather arriving very shortly, I look forward to the arrival of Harlequin Ducks to Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. Located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island along the New Jersey coast, "Barnegat" is a winter destination for diving waterfowl. Why this particular area? Well Barnegat offers easy access to open ocean from a rocky coast, where diving ducks such as the Common Eider, Red-Breasted Merganser, Surf Scoter, and Harlequin Duck prefer to hunt for food. When hunting or just in need of a break, these ducks will swim close to the jetty or sometimes perch on the rocks -- offering great photo opportunities! (click to continue ...)
